Put Yourself In My Shoes I’m guessing that for you it was all a little game But you forgot to read me any of the rules So what do I do with all of this pain And what do I do with you and these blues You were so intense on trying to convince me That our love was higher than the whole damn sky Then out of the abyss you just dismiss me Now it cuts me like a complicated lie Put yourself in my shoes for a minute Maybe you will find just how it feels Maybe it’ll seem just a little schizophrenic Cause you don’t really recognize my pain is real Put yourself in my shoes x2 You’re living your life like it’s all a little comedy But now you’ve made a tragedy out of mine Can you feel what your little fun has done to me Wish I could grieve it all and leave it all behind chorus Bridge I was all set long before I met you Then you overwhelmed me like a whirlwind You were pursuing me and proving you were true to me Then you say you’ve gotta walk away in the end Last chorus Put yourself in my shoes for a minute Put yourself in my shoes for a while Maybe it’ll seem just a little schizophrenic Maybe it’ll seem just a little wild Put yourself in my shoes x 4

Well I turned on the television Then I turned it off Paced around the kitchen Then I went out for a walk Ended up downtown Stopped at the coffeeshop Didn’t need the caffeine and besides it was rather hot What do you do when your sweetheart’s out of town Ah… you just wander around Tried to read a novel but I got a little annoyed By the main protagonist created by Conroy So I opened up my notebook and started writing a song Didn’t think I’d miss her quite this much but I was wrong What do you do when you’re feeling kind of down And there’s hardly any fun to be found What do you do when your sweetheart’s out of town Ah… you just wander around I like to think I’m an island in the sea And I don’t need anybody but me But I’m not a cowboy riding into the sun And maybe it’s okay to need someone No matter the distraction she was on my mind Way off in Alaska while I’m in Caroline Wishing I could talk to her but no service for her phone So I gathered up my things and headed back home Chorus

She's Broken 03:04
She's Broken She's broken in all the right ways I've spoken out of turn, too much to say sometimes it causes trouble sometimes I need a double... but I'm not talking about a drink She's magic, she can turn me around on a dime and it's tragic if I don't appreciate her time sometimes I don't think straight sometimes I'm in a bad state... and I'm not talking 'bout Carolina She's broken in all the right ways I'm not jokin' she knows how to make my day all the time I appreciate her all the time I can't wait til later... so I just jump in the car She's special in nearly every way Celestial, I suspect she could fly away sometimes I'm there for her But always I adore her... I just hope she knows I do She's broken ... in all the right ways

Don’t ever reach out to me don’t ever say my name You’re not among the living that I’ll ever claim I’m blocking you on my phone I’m moving far, far away You’ll never know where I am I’ll always want it that way Don’t ever say my name Don’t ever say my name Don’t ever say it out loud or think it in your brain Don’t ever say my name I want you out of my head I’ll do whatever it takes ‘cause to me you’re dead I just need it that way I don’t want any part of you please go your way and I’ll go mine Pretend that we never met just go your way and I’ll be fine Chorus/lead break Bridge It’s people like you who only think of themselves It’s so sad but true and I don’t want any part of that hell Chorus

It was raining that afternoon And he driving down a distant road Someone called him, it sounded like his mother, but she had died about a year ago He woke up he was on a gurney And someone stared into his eyes How many fingers am I holding that’s when he began to realize Name the people you want to speak to Before you have to leave this world He said my best friend, and my daughter, And my daughter’s little baby girl I was rolling down the highway sheets of rain were coming down Before I knew it I was spinning, like a top, turning round and round For a moment, in slow motion I glided down a grassy hill Came to a standstill among some cattails my hands still gripping the wheel I named the people I wanted to speak to Before I have to leave this world So I called em up and told I love them - My 2 sons and my baby girl It was raining that afternoon And he was far away from home The nurse had to help him find those 3 people but she reached them on the phone When they showed up he was shallow breathing He said he loved them more than this world Then he said goodbye to his best friend And his daughter and her baby girl So name the people you’d want to speak to Before you leave this world behind Track em down and tell em you love em Long before you’re out of time (repeat)

This is where we raised our kids, sitting on this porch it was all so rich And I loved all of it just the way it was Didn’t seem to be enough and we moved away and it broke my heart & I have to say We had everything we needed that you could think of Well we painted it yellow then we painted it green but it didn’t matter, we coulda let it be …Cause it was positively perfect just the way it was The kids ran in the yard and made up games And I could’ve stayed there forever and it’d been all the same Cause we had everything we needed you could think of We buried that ole cat in the afternoon light Somehow leaving him there just didn’t feel right Whatever happened to the vision that we had I try not to think about it cause it only makes me angry and sad My baby daughter’s birthday in this ole backyard And when that big oak tree hit the ground real hard There’s so many memories I can think of All those neighbors and their chainsaws one Saturday morn Didn’t have to ask them, it was like they were raising a barn Yeah we had everything we needed you could think of This was a great house and I love it still Coulda lived here forever that’s just how I feel It was all so good just the way it was But we ripped out our hearts n moved away And I’ll never understand why we didn’t stay Cause we had everything we needed, yeah everything we needed you could think of everything we needed cause that ole house was full of love

I want to see your smiling face shining down on me x3 I want you standing right here for everyone to see I want to feel your sweet touch on my skin x3 Won’t you take my hand and hold it once again I want to hear your sweet voice calling out my name x3 And feel you love coming down like pouring rain I want to feel your sweet love way down in my bones x3 Then I know, I’ll never be alone I want to see your smiling face shining down on me x3 I want you standing right here for everyone to see

Able To Try 03:47
Able To Try It’s not about you, it never is It’s not about what’s hers and what’s his It’s all about what you bring to the table And can you live up to your own standard if you’re able Well I’m able to try Can you say that and look me in the eye I t’s not about me, that’s what you say But that’s not how it feels, not on this side anyway How can I keep from taking it personally When I’m standing here and you’re staring at me Well I’m able to try Can you say that and look me in the eye Yes I’m able to try We spend our time on who’s wrong and who’s right We could spend that time on making it through the night It’s not about you and it’s not about me So what are we holding on for so desperately I believe we can set this all aside And live ours lives as though we’ve nothing to hide Well I’m able to try Can you say that and look me in the eye Yes I’m able … I’m able to try Yes I’m able to try, tryyyy, Yes I’m able to try, yes I’m able to try

Almost Like Heaven I was sitting on the backporch, kitchen light peaking through the blinds The crickets were listening to me sing a song by John Prine I was talking to him and telling him all about you Yeah I talk to John Prine and he tells me what to do Well I’d met him once before, but it was backstage He looked like he did way back when, he had hardly aged He told me to write you a song and tell you how I feel Cause he said it sure looks to him like you’re the real deal Well it’s almost like heaven when I look in your eyes Like 7 come 11, like I’ve won a big prize Yeah it’s almost like heaven when I see you smile So let’s keep this going for a long, long while Well you can’t imagine how this all made me feel Was I losing my mind or was this all real I was talking to a dead man and he was helping me write a song But after the mushrooms wore off, John Prine was gone Well it’s almost like heaven when I look in your eyes You’ve made a big impression, you’re like a big door prize Yeah it’s almost like heaven when I see you smile So let’s keep this going for a long, long while Well I’m sittin’ on the backporch, kitchen light peaking through the blinds And I’m singing a song that I wrote with the ghost of John Prine

Old yearbooks and Mason jars I’m packin’ and movin’ and I’m getting tired Birthday cards from mom and dad Reminding me of all the luck I’ve had Dad’s old clock doesn’t run anymore I’m packing it too but I don’t know what for I guess it’ll be a kind of reminder Time stands still when you look behind her All of these guitars are going too Cause every single one of them helped me through All of the hard times and most of the good I can still feel it when I touch the wood Dad’s ole ticker gave out last year While he was sitting in this old chair I guess it’ll be a kind of reminder Time stands still when you look behind her This old desk has had its day But you will never see me give it away Used to watch Grandpa pay his bills Now I sleep under Grandma’s quilt Dad’s old Bible has seen better days Maybe I’ll read it at the new place Guess it’ll be a kind of reminder Time stands still when you look behind her Well, it’s moving day Can’t seem to throw these memories away, so I guess they’ll stay Ole Kurt Vonnegut and Kierkegaard Box em all up and throw em in the car This old sweater is getting frayed But it was a gift before she passed away Mama’s jewelry’s a little out of date But I can’t bring myself to give it away I’ll just pack it up with all the rest I’m loading up my life like a cedar chest Dad’s old clock doesn’t run anymore I’m packing it too but I don’t know what for I guess it’ll be a kind of reminder Time stand still when you look behind her
